1998 Other Saturn Models shifter broken

I have a five-speed transmission on my little saturn. It is stuck in 3rd gear the shifter is completly loose. I might think a cable is broken. Does anyone know where I might begin to look for that problem? Or is that pretty common? How can I fix it?

I just had this happen to me today. I have a 1998 SC2 with 120,009 miles. It's the linkage. From what I understand there is both internal and external linkage (under the hood near the windshield wiper fluid and within center consul). Right now, that is all I know, but it is at least something to start with, tomorrow I should know more.
