Removing the shifter knob or shift lever is a fairly involved task. It does not simply twist off (thank goodness or there would be a bunch of people driving around who would find themselves all of the sudden holding onto a shift knob that they had just untwisted from their transmission)!
Instead, it involves first removing the console so you can get down to many of the bolts that hold the shifter cables.
This could be where some confusion comes in because many people are aware of manual transmissions where the shifter knob goes directly into the tranny. Hence, it may be possible to unscrew the shifter and remove it. Since Saturn engine/transmissions are mounted transversely, the transmission does not go under the console so the shifter lever is connected to the transmission via cables. You need to be able to get down to the cables to remove the shifter knob.
The best thing to do is get hold of a reputable repair manual that explains the procedure. Chilton's #62300, Saturn Coupes/Sedans 1991-02, has a section specifically describing shift lever removal and installation. Hope this helps.
