This is a very general question making a detailed diagnosis pretty impossible. Still, this is the reaction from the majority of folks out there so, you are in good company.
Obviously, if the clutch pedal feels mushy and you can no longer drive the car, you have a "clutch mechanism" problem. Is it the actual clutch or is it linkage etc. Only a decent mechanic who can spend a bit of time can tell.
I suggest you read the article "Avoid Car Repair Rip Off" that is listed on the left-hand side navigation bar on this site (that is, if you don't have a reputable mechanic already - heck, even if you got one, a few minutes reading may be of benefit). Then you need to go out there and find a place that will diagnose your problem and be able to fix it for a reasonable price.
If you have the luxury of a 2nd car, drive around and visit the shop. Even renting a sub-compact for a day is a cheap way to be able to shop around. Or, call in one of those debts one of your friends owes you and let them drive you around for the day!
Hope this helps.
