Runs rough and engine light blinks

Hi, Alyissa, and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

A flashing light indicates a misfire. However, a misfire should not smell like something burning unless it backfired. Is that what happened?

As far as the check engine light, you can scan the computer to determine what trouble codes are stored. Here is a quick video which shows how. Also, most parts stores will scan it for free or lend you the scanner.

Once you scan it, let me know what codes you get.

Also, the idea of it not starting is usually related to plug wires. So, that could be the issue as well as the misfire.

By any chance, do you know what codes were found? Also, here is a link that describes what a backfire is and what can cause it. Basically, if you were having trouble when it rained, something was getting wet in the ignition system. My guess is there was a build up of fuel in one of the cylinders because a spark plug wasn't igniting the fuel. When it finally did, you would have heard the backfire.

Let me know if you have the codes that were found. They will be something like the following:
P0300
P0301
P0302

And so on. A P0300 means there is a random misfire. The P030... indicates which cylinder is missfiring. For example, P0301 indicates cylinder 1, P0302 indicates cylinder 2 and so on.
