A flashing light indicates a misfire. However, a misfire should not smell like something burning unless it backfired. Is that what happened?
As far as the check engine light, you can scan the computer to determine what trouble codes are stored. Here is a quick video which shows how. Also, most parts stores will scan it for free or lend you the scanner.

Once you scan it, let me know what codes you get.

Also, the idea of it not starting is usually related to plug wires. So, that could be the issue as well as the misfire.
