When you press the gas the RPMs will go up but the car won’t accelerate and you can hear it big down and then it jerks itself forward over and over like it’s trying to go but not getting any power. Then once you get up hill it will act like nothing happened and drive fine for a while and repeat.

This sounds like you have to check the transmission fluid which will cause the problem you are describing.

Here is a guide to help but we should run the codes as well, I have included a guide for that below:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-and-add-transmission-fluid

and

Please go over these guides and report back.

Took it to AutoZone, put it on the scanner and the transmission is slipping, the power train system P1870 to be exact. What are some recommend steps? Do you think trying the new fluids and cleansers for the transmission fluids would maybe help to see if it just needed a good cleaning or do we need to take it to a mechanic and get the transmission rebuilt?

P1870 Code - Transmission Component Slipping so it seems like the transmission is worn out, but you can try a service to see if you can get a few more miles out of it with a new filter.

This guide can help you with the job:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-service-an-automatic-transmission

If not here is how to remove the transmission for a rebuild. Also, this video shows the job being done on a different car, but the process is the same.

Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.
