It sounds like bearings are bad, but when I jacked it up there was absolutely no play in the wheel. My question is, could it be the CV axle?

No, a C/V axle in the rear will not make a noise. It is most like a bad wheel bearing. You do not need to have any movement in the bearing for it to be bad. With the truck in the air I would use a stethoscope to pinpoint the noise.
