Car makes a rattling noise on the left side, front of the car. The noise is worse when we drive on bad roads, which in Africa where we currently live, is easy. Car has been checked recently and has no serious problems. We have been told it is the gear box but could that be true? It is nothing serious because we have had it for more than a year. Thank you, Regards, Gertrud

If it is a rattle, I doubt it's the gearbox. Have things like heat shields, strut mounts, bushings. Been checked?

I agree with the above technicians second part of his response. Check sway bar links, bushings, heat shields, etc. But I need to correct the first part. The power steering hear box can indeed cause a rattle emanating from the left side due to the yoke becoming defective inside the rack. There is also a Technical Service Bulletin to repair this. Although I can't entirely confirm thats what it is, it's a good place to start. The bulletin number is 08-ST-003. This should give you a starting point. Let us know what you find. Thanks.
