I am trying to remove the power steering pump as, alas, it has gone out. I am a decent mechanic, but I cannot figure out why the pullet shaft has an allen set screw in the end of it. I cannot get the pump mounting bolts out all of the way to remove the pump as they hit the pulley before fully disengaging from the pump body. It looks like the allen set screw has to come out to remove the pulley. But I cannot find any info on removing this set screw. And the special pulley removal tool I have seen is supposed to slide into a plain old hole in the end of the shaft. Is there a special way to remove this allen screw while holding the pulley motionless? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

The tool being used is not real expensive, the set is used to remove and reinstall the pulley. (What a deal!) See my link below (from "Repair Guides" at the top of our pages)

Maybe once you see the way it works you will be able to understand how the pieces/ halves surround the stub/ knub and get captured by the 'ring' and quickly installs and quickly disassembles when the job it done.

Showing you this one first, so you can see the halves captured by the slip ring.

This one here, is lesser expensive (will work just fine) their picture did not show the detail like the first link, it is basically the same design.

Yes, I have seen the tool to remove and replace the pulley. My problem is that the shaft is Nnot open ended. There is an allen head set screw in it. So, I think if I buy and use the tool, it will not get the pulley off because the set screw is holding it in place. Have you ever heard of this set up? Perhaps it would help if I could take, and send you a picture of the end of the pulley shaft?

Maybe insure that there are not female threads deep in the allen screw.

Lets have a close front view of the allen screw and maybe one from the side.

Thanks,
