I am putting in a new power steering pump the manual says to use only ms5931 but you have to order it. I have been told I can use ATF or Mopar power steering fluid also. Can I use ATF?

No go with the ATF!

I went through this with a buddy a while back (two years or so), the dealership did not have it, he said it was like they hadn't heard of it.

He, like you, wants the best information possible to make a decision.

We did some heavy reading here and there, some say it has to be the Chrysler stuff, others said an equivalent was okay.

By equivalent, I mean the MS5931 is advertised on the bottle specs of the substitution. (I am sure you have gathered that already).

I am going to link you to what he is using. There are others out there.

https://www.autozone.com/brake-and-power-steering-fluid-additives/power-steering-fluid-and-additive/autozone-power-steering-fluid/828028_0_0

Scroll down and look at their specs.

Glad I have manual steering in both of my Jeeps!

Let us know what you decide.

Okay, so I am not going to use ATF. Mopar power steering fluid meets the ms5931 specs so that is what I will use.

I have asked you about my power steering fluid before my vehicle calls for ms 5931 I know not to use ATF and the link you posted does not send that item to the US. I went to a Chrysler dealer and he seemed to know a lot about it but what he sold me was Mopar ms 9602, but before I put that in I did more research and I am finding mixed reviews about that too. I am so confused on why they have made this so difficult can I use the 9602 or is that wrong too?

Read this, http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f13/p-s-fluid-questions-ms5931-919291/
"Mopar P/N 04883077 Hydraulic fluid / Power steering fluid (MS5931)

MS5931 is the only fluid that can be used for the power steering system. No exceptions!

Important note:
The factory fill power steering fluid for all 1999-2004 Grand Cherokees is a unique fluid, MS5931. ATF+4 (MS9602) should not be mixed or used as a “topping off” fluid on the Grand Cherokee WJ. All WJ models should be serviced using only the special MS5931 fluid. ATF+4 is not an approved power steering fluid and should never be used under any circumstances. Note that all fluids will darken in color with usage and fluid color is no longer an indication of fluid condition."
