Poor Acceleration?

(This is my son’s car) Car was having trouble starting for several weeks. Now when it starts it idles okay, but when pressing gas, it gets poor acceleration. We can continuously tap the gas and it will get up to about 20 MPH. But no more. It gets better acceleration backwards than in drive. And it sputters terribly when driving. Someone said fuel filter, but I want to make sure before I replace it.

This can be a clogged air filter or catalytic converter, if these are okay, I would swap out h4e fuel pump. Here are two guides to help us with instructions on how to replace the fuel pump in the images below.
