I had my engine checked out because the light came on and stayed on, the mechanics said it is the oxygen sensor. Is this something serious?

No. It is just the opposite. A faulty oxygen sensor is one of the simplest repairs. A faulty oxygen sensor will cause poor emissions which lowers your vehicle's fuel mileagae. Other than that, it doesn't harm the vehicle in any way.
