The instrument cluster has gone out for the second time in my car. The first time the dealership repaired it, this time my husband decided to try his hand at it.
Everything works but the odometer will not light up.

Hello and thanks for donating

you mean after he replaced it with a new cluster the odometer doesn't work? If so, it's because when replacing the cluster you have to reprogram the odometer. This is done by your local dealer as they have the computer equipment to do so.

All of the Pontiac dealers are closed in my area now including the one I purchased it from. I guess it's really not a big deal since the gauges work and that's what counts. Still annoying though after all the work he went through pulling the dash apart lol

GM will do it? Yes there is, in fact my husband was saying that he needs to bring our truck in for some recall. So all we should have to do is bring in the car with the original cluster showing the original mileage?

That will make my husband happy, he's been at his wits end he really shouldn't be working on cars lol

Yup GM makes Pontiac so they can service it, just take the car over there so they can program it, not sure if you need old cluster or not but not a bad idea to bring it anyway.

So we got it to the dealer and they said that the cluster was not good because they don't need to be reprogrammed unless they were built after 2005.
So my husband went to a u-pull and found another one
and it works great and reads the proper mileage.

I have had many problems with this car but it seemed to be doing fine. Yesterday I got an oil change and an emissions test. The shop closed after I left. I realized after leaving that my speedometer was not working, just showing at 0 no matter if I was going or not. The car also seems to jerk really hard when going from one gear to another. Could this have been caused by the oil change or emissions test somehow? Someone not knowing what they are doing and messing up? And would the speedometer and hard shifting be connected? Is it a hard fix/expensive fix?

Hi MARIAHG,

The speedometer not working would definitely result in the transmission shifting hard and/or erratic.

Since you noticed this problem after the service job, it could be caused by the oil change or emission test if wiring connectors or connections were worked on.

It could also be coincidence that the sensor decided to quit at this very moment and the only way to find out is to go back to the service person who handled this job to have a check.

Costing would depend on what comes out of the diagnostics.

Let us know how it goes.

Why does a speedometer stick at a random number no matter how fast or slow you are going?
When I was driving I noticed that the speedometer stuck at 17 mph and didn't move no matter how fast I sped up or how slow I slowed down. Even when I came to a complete stop it didn't move. Does this mean I need to have the speed sensor replaced or something else?

Sounds like the stepper motors in the cluster are going bad. Go to your dealer and have them take a look at it. They will perform a sweep test and see it it will respond. They will also check to see if the speed sensor is working correctly.
