I had a Cavalier that did the same thing! I had to replace the Ignition Park / Gear (might night be the right name)l line before it'd work again. Basically, it's a spring loaded line that is attached to the ignition and to the gear shifter. When you have your car out of park, it only allows you to turn the key back to accessories. Sometimes it can fall off the shifter.
This is a pretty hard process, as it involves tearing the dash and center console apart to get to it.
Recommended Way
You may need to purchase a Haynes Repair Guide at your local auto parts store.
A quick fix might be figuring out (and I can't remember how I did this) how to get the plastic cover off of the shift area (the dark grey plastic around the gear shifter, not the shifter itself) and just disconnect the line from the shifter, push it all the way in, and the key should work.
