I have a 97 Pontiac Sunfire with a 2.2L engine. It has 214,000 and has run fine till last summer. Toward the end of the summer when the temperature outside was hot it started stalling. During the winter time this year it has never missed a lick. Now that spring is here and the temperature is warming up it has started doing this again. I have replaced fuel filter, both coil packs, wires, plugs. The only common denominator seems to be the outside temperature. To add to it, you can smell gas inside the car sometimes. Not sure if it is related but just wanted to tell you. The check engine light comes on and when put on a computer it gives a misfire error and other times nothing at all.

The fuel smell is most likely going to be an injector leaking externally. It is common on those engines. As far as the stalling goes. Does it start right back up? When it dies, does it sputter out like it is running out of gas or is it like someone shut the key off?

You will be driving down the road and when you let off the gas for a bit and then accelerate again it starts to spit and sputter. Sometime is will cut off. When you crank it up after it does this without letting it cool down it will spit and sputter like it is on firing on 2 cylinders. It kinda reminds me of something when the timing is off.
