My car started making a grinding noise whenever it was running. I was driving on the highway last weekend with the cruise on and noticed the tach was bouncing up and down a few hundred rpm. I put the car in neutral and noticed the rpm's evened out.

I then went to pass somebody and tranny banged down into passing gear.
When I pulled off the highway to stop at a store the tranny started slipping and the car would not move at all. I shut the car off for a few minutes and was able to drive a few miles before it started to slip again. I finally got the car home after many restarts.
The next morning after the car cooled down completely it would not move at all.
My mechanic is suggesting a used transmission, should I waste the money and tell him to put in a new filter first?

Hello,

Since you are unable to move the car, putting filter in it will not make a difference.
However you do want to make sure you have fluid in the transmission. If you would have ran without or very little fluid the transmission will not shit and ultimately fail.

If the internals are defective of the transmission then replacing is the best option. Especially if you get a good condition used transmission.

I have attached diagrams for your reference.

Please let me know of any questions.
Thank you.
