Ran out of gas, got some more, would not catch, thought maybe some air was in the line. Got starting fluid, car would run on the fluid and then stall, not getting any fuel, I figure. So turn the key, listening. I hear the fuel pump, so that is working. Figure maybe fuel filter is clogged. Change fuel filter, still won't start. Check the inlet side of the filter, to make sure fuel is getting there. Hear a hissing sound, then fuel comes out. Try to start again, not working. Should I try the starting fluid again, or is something else wrong? Thanks

I'll try not to add to your frustation. You need to know what the fuel pressure is, not just that there is some pressure. It is critical that the fuel pressure is in spec. IF it is out of spec, does not necessarily mean pump, but if it is too low the odds are pretty good it is a pump problem.

I have a 95 grand am that acted the same way I was also thinking fuel until I disconnected the line to the fuel rail and discovered plenty of fuel. It is possible you never ran completly out of gas. Try unplugging your throttle position sensor and crank it over with it disconnected and see if it starts. If it does replace the throttle position sensor.
