Steering gear is loose and shifts around when turning the steering wheel. Bolt on driver's side of the gear is loose. How do you get at this bolt? Access from the bottom is restricted by the subframe and access from the back is blocked by the torsion bar.

I have one method to use for this situation.

1)The torsion bar, (sway bar for this model), has two or four short bolts that hold it to the sub frame, depending on the engine type. I will say they are not easy to remove but it is only time consuming and does not require advanced skill or a special tool. Removing all four of these bolts (and a little bit of prying) should give you the room needed.

2) If the clearance is still not enough, and there is a chance it might, simply LOOSEN the two subframe bolts for another half inch of clearance. (This step is in addition to removing the sway bar bolts). The safe method is to use 2 additional jack stands supporting the subframe,(other than the 2 already used to support the vehicle), remove the back 2 bolts and then slowly jack up the front of the vehicle to create the clearance needed between the subframe and body.

Good Luck,
