There could be many reasons for something like this, but it seems it may be related to the roughness of the road you were driving on. Do you have a scan tool to check for trouble codes? If not, any auto parts store will scan the codes for free.

Outside of scanning the system, taking a look at the engine bay area will be necessary. Check for any signs of rubbed or broken wires going to important parts like the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor, Oxygen sensors, IAC (Idle Air Control) Valve, or any vacuum tubing going to/from the EGR system or to/from the engine and intake manifold.
