If the cable itself isn't broke, while you pull on the cable with a pair of vice-grips, have a helper stand at the end of the hood, pop the hood with palm of hand in area of hood-latch, Sometimes it will open? After hood is up, lube the latch mechanism. You might be able to let a wire hang down from the latch mechanism, behind the grill, if it happens again, maybe you can grab the wire to release the hood latch. I can't see your vehicle from here, don't know if that suggestion is practical? I have done it on other makes and models.
