my voltage gage keeps going up and down what could be causing this

You could have a slipping drive belt or a bad alternator, could also have a cable that is not completely and securly hooked up.

Blackop555 is right but something to always keep in mind as a possibility when dealing w/auto electrical is that almost anything can be a loose live wire that's being grounded which can be anywhere between the front bumper and the rear bumper. If everything checks out ok it may be time to get ahold of a test light, continuity tester, wire chaser (my fave :), etc.
