Took car to dealership to diagnose constant problem of car shutting off after running for approximately four minutes. They diagnosed as PCM. They wanted $1,400.00 to fix so got a used one from wreaking yard. After replacement car starts and shuts off almost immediately. After code check. It is because the PCM is specific to the VIN number on the car. Replaced it twice now. How many different ones are there? Or can I reset the PCM and have it work. If I have to go back to the dealer they are going gouge the heck out of me. It is a small town. Can I do it myself or can another mechanic reprogram PCM?

"It is because the PCM is specific to the VIN number on the car"

Means that computer will only work on one car, the car that has its VIN number programmed into it. Unlike many GM computers, your dealer should be able to program your car's VIN number into a used computer.

Just to be sure we are not overlooking a simple, common problem, check if the engine will stay running if you hold the accelerator pedal down 1/4". Also verify it is not in theft mode by unlocking a front door with the key or with the remote key fob.
