Hi Glassman,
These sliding doors require two things in order to operate properly. No obstructions and good contacts on the sliding door latch so that it can locate the door when it is latching.
So to determine what the issue is we need to evaluate when it reverses path. If it reverses at the exact same spot every time and this is just as the latch is touching the contacts on the door post then it is possible the door latch/contacts are the issue.
However, I would put my money on the fact that the door is out of adjustment. On a vehicle that is sixteen years old, the sliding door has opened and closed countless times. Just like any mechanical device eventually it will wear out and not function the same. So when these doors are far enough out of adjustment, they begin to get harder to open and close. The motor that moves the door will sense this additional tension or resistance and think that something is obstructing the door so it reverses path. I am pretty confident that this is your issue because of the way you described how it beeps and then opens. This is typical of it thinking something is in the way so it doesn't want to pinch it. Usually, if it is a latch or contact it will beep and then just stop where it is. The fact that it is beeping (I would guess it beeps three times) and then opens is showing it thinks it is closing on something.
I attached the detail about the operation of these doors and the adjustment procedure if you want to give it a try.
Let me know if you need anything further. Thanks
