Do you have to have it installed? I know it's supposed to be installed. But I don't have it but I need to get my car going and I don't have it, so unfortunately I'm unable to install it. Will it make a difference if it is not installed? Please help. Thank you for your time.

Well it depends on if you want the brakes to operate or not. Without the strut the shoes will collapse in as they are pulled by the springs instead of being held in position near the drums by the strut and adjuster assemblies. The shoes will also be able to rattle as the strut applies pressure that holds them steady. What happened to the original ones? Rusted or what? You should be able to get them at a parts store or dealer.
