Okay, so my husband last year around this same time replace the timing belt which also came with a new water pump just giving the details of what all is going on then I'll ask the question I apologize I'm a woman so I'll give you as many details so you'll have a good understanding about my certain concern. The car started to overheat which was the first time since we've owned it bought the car in April of 2022. Husband has been working on a slew of electrical issues which stemmed from the window control module and key fob making it go into alarm mode (we drove it for almost 3 weeks in alarm mode then it was fixed or so it seems anyway) and noticed the car was overheating. He then replaced the thermostat, that did not fix overheating issue, then we have filled and filled and let all the bubbles out of the cooling system, still overheating, husband noticed the rubber gasket wasn't sealing properly on the radiator cap so we have replaced that as well, that shouldn't be an issue, noticed a small leak at the top of the radiator, plan on fixing that asap (he works and doesn't trust me to do it which for a girl I am pretty confident in my auto repair skills) either way I'm getting down to the real question here I noticed yesterday sitting in the gas station parking lot that the heater wasn't blowing hot air which it should considering it was definitely hot, I've expressed this as well as he experienced it first hand on the drive to work this morning. Okay, so here is the big question.

If we replace the whole radiator I am concerned that the heater core has gone foul due to running it hotter than usual and that's why the heater isn't blowing hot air when it over heats, problem there is it goes in and out like one time it will, one time it won't usually I'm assuming when the water needs to be filled up and it's starting to overheat. If we replace the radiator will the heater core be okay? Or should we replace both?

Since posting this question a new symptom has occurred, the heater fan blows full blast and then will blow half blast then go back to full. Also, it seems like the setting on the air conditioner system is changing from max A/C to just regular A/C. I'll explain why we don't know which setting it's on because of the head unit that was installed prior to us owning it we've never been able to see the A/C controls on the screen at all. It's a while issue on its own. Either way I told my husband to unplug the damn thing because we didn't have these issues until it went psyco and just completely stop playing sound to dead and won't turn on. I am so over this sitting on the side of the road and have been babying her every few miles stopping to fill the radiator back up I don't like to let it get anywhere near overheating and it's always half full please help!

The fact that the heater doesn't seem to work sounds like the cooling system is getting filled with exhaust gases due to a blown head gasket. But it could be the radiator is just leaking. To confirm the problem please go over these guides:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/head-gasket-blown-test

and

Can I ask if you can hear the cooling fan running when the engine is overheating? Please go over these guides and get back to us.

That would be the strange part, it works sometimes I've noticed because I'm the one filling the radiator mostly that it works sporadically sometimes it's a long time as in 20-25 minutes and it won't kick on at all.

There's a big crack all the way around where the hose connects from the motor to the top of the radiator all the way around on the nipple, I think they call that closer to the housing on the plastic where the hose is clamped on.

I would fix that first, make sure the cooling system does not get low on coolant.

OKay, so, here's able to rig it up where it's holding fine now and hopefully our radiator will hold until we are able to afford another radiator Tuesday or Wednesday. I didn't know if jb weld would help with it being a plastic cap on there but he jb welded about 4 layers along with some plastic sheeting to make it take form and let it dry then coated it with flex seal its holding amazing thank goodness a combo of that and sheer determination and that stop leak helped out, considering it's almost a 20 year old car and has almost a quarter of a million miles on it she's very resilient. He did hard wire one of the fans to stay on when you turn the key on, the fans weren't kicking on properly either. I'm thinking it may be the sensor that tells them to kick on may be the culprit. Stay tuned.
