I changed the thermostat and it’s still happening. I took it to a mechanic, and he checked everything, and he said he doesn’t see what’s causing this. It’s not leaking or anything. Please help.

Hi,

I have a few questions. First, does the engine run hot if you are driving at highway speeds or is it limited to in-town driving? Also, and don't laugh, is the heater working properly?

Let me know. Also, let me know if you notice the radiator cooling fans turning on.

Take care,

Joe

It runs hot after driving for about 10 minutes. It funny that you asked that just today my heater is blowing out cold air. I changed the thermostat, hoses, and overflow tank. My car is not leaking or running rough. What could it be?

Hi,

I asked about the heater because if there is an airlock, it can cause the heater not to work and overheating.

Do me a favor. Once the engine cools off completely, remove the radiator cap and confirm the coolant is full to the top of the radiator. If it is low, refill it, install the radiator cap, and then make sure the reservoir is at the full "cold" level.

I do have another question. Most people don't realize that the coolant boiling temperature is increased when pressurized. The radiator cap may not maintain the pressure. I believe most parts stores can test it for you.

Also, pay attention to see if the radiator cooling fan is turning on when the engine starts getting too hot. Additionally, pay attention to see if there is any indication of it actually overheating. For example, do you hear any gurgling from the engine or radiator when the engine is first turned off?

Let me know what you find.

Hi,

If I had to guess, I would say there was air in the system that finally worked its way out causing the level to drop. How low was the coolant?

If you are concerned there could be a leak, it can only go in a few places. First, an external leak that you would likely see. Next, if the vehicle had a bad head gasket, it could leak into the engine oil. That would create a tan creamy substance to show up under the oil fill cap and you would likely see it on the oil dipstick. And the last is also related to a head gasket issue. If coolant makes its way into the combustion chamber, it will burn with the fuel. However, when that happens, you will likely see thick white smoke from the exhaust.

If you take a look through this link, it explains how to check and what to look for when you have a head gasket concern.

Now that the coolant is full again, keep an eye on it. If you notice the heater not working as it should, that is a good indicator that the coolant is low.

Let me know if the engine still overheats after refilling the coolant.

Take care,

Joe
