Whilst driving the car overheated (no warning light), the tappets made a terrible noise, drove with the noise for about 5km's, then there was a loss of power to the point of the engine shutting down. Smoke came from the engine, waited a few minutes, filled up with water, didn't want to start. I then took off the battery terminal for a few minutes, reconnected it and it still didn't start. Checked for leaks, nothing, replaced the radiator cap a few days prior and the old one was worn and caused overheating. Two days later and the engine cranks but doesn't want to start.

Good morning,

This sounds like you may have damaged the head gasket in the engine from the overheating.

Coolant may have entered the engine and that damaged the engine itself.

I would start with a compression test to see if there is any compression for the engine to work.
