I am helping a friend on a 1990 Oldsmobile 88 Royale with 96,000 miles. The problem is a small vacuum pump looking thing on the driver's side front wheel well in the engine compartment. It seems to run even when the car is off and may have kept the car from starting or a least ran the battery down. We disconnected it and all seems fine. What did we do and is it important? JKW

My first guess would be that it is a level-ride compressor that you unpluged. The compressor supplies air to the rear shocks to level the car when it is loaded. It wont cause any problems if you leave it unpluged except the ride maybe a bit bouncy...

Thanks for the excellent help! This sounds pretty reasonable and most of all non-damaging.
