Can a defective battery cause the failure of my car's alternator?

It happens all the time if the battery had a shorted or very bad cell. The alternator overworks and "zing" it works no more. I always replace a battery with an alternator unless the battery is new.

I just put a new altentaor in my 97 pontiac grand am and I drove about a mile and all the warning lights came on and my car shut down. So I had a friend jump me and ithe battery light stayed on and it died again. Is it my battery or something eles please help don't know much about car repair
