My car is shutting down while I'm driving. I have noticed this happens when the temp gage gets a little above 200 maybe 225. However lately it is happening 200 and sometimes a bit below. It drives ok on the freeway but in town is where I notice the issue. Sometimes I can coast to a stop and restart other times I will have to let it sit between 5 & 45 minutes. I may get a little ways between dying sometimes I only get a block. I noticed that when the radio is on it seems to speed this process up. On occasion turning the heater on to lower the temperature works for a while. Lately that seems to do nothing. This is very dangerous I have a little one. The battery has been replace all connections and fluids checked. I have also noticed a slight drop in gas mileage recently. Any suggestions or direction is greatly appreciated! Many thanks!

By what your telling me, it sounds like you may have a bad crank position sensor, this sensor tells the computer where the crankshaft is in its stroke. Whats probably happening is, when the sensor gets too hot it leaves an open circuit, thus making it impossible for the computer to get a reading, then causing it to shut off. Oldsmobiles around that year are prone to that issue, I had a 1993 cutlass that did the same thing, it doesnt give a service engine light so most people wont consider this.
