Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros. Com.
There has been many Toyota vehicles which have been experiencing this issue. There are no leaks, no burning of oil. What seems to be happening is the piston rings are allowing excessive pressure to bypass them, the crankcase builds excessive pressure, and then oil vapors are fed through the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) and re burned by the engine. The catalytic converter seems to handle the issue well enough that you never see it burn oil, but it is happening.
Toyota has placed a technical service bulletin (TSB) in effect. However, that is not a recall. Because this problem is not a safety issue, there is no recall. Additionally, they consider a quart of oil in 1,200 miles acceptable. The only way this can be covered under warranty is if the vehicle still has power-train warranty left and a dealer confirms that there is a problem.
I took the liberty of checking if the TSB related to your vehicle. The only Matrix I found was for an 2009. However, there are vehicles not listed on the TSB that are experiencing the same issue.
I hope this helps you. I wish I had better news.
If you have other questions, feel free to ask.
Take care,
Joe
