The severity of the problem can be generalized by how the check engine light acts. A flashing light indicates the most serious of conditions and means you should stop the engine as soon as possible. Too much unburned fuel is going into the exhaust system where it will burn in the catalytic converter and overheat it. That can turn a minor problem into a very expensive repair.
The place to start is by having the diagnostic fault codes read and recorded. Those codes never say to replace a part or that one is bad. They only indicate the circuit or system that needs further diagnosis, or the unacceptable operating condition. The people at many auto parts stores will read those codes for you for free.
