I went to work it quit running on me but started back up. A couple of days later it did it again. I was leaving my friend house and it shut off so I put a fuel pump and fuel filter. It has fuel pressure, and spark. If I spray starting fluid in it then it will run. That is the only way it will start.

Sounds like the fuel pump is pumping, but not strong enough. If you borrow a gauge from AutoZone, you can check the actual fuel pressure. Your van requires somewhere around 60 psi at a minimum to start the engine. Much less than that and it will struggle to start. This is a very common issue with the S-series trucks and the Astro van.

Please run down this guide and report back.

I get that, but you probably are not getting enough pressure. If it is less than about 60 psi, then the van will not start. But it could still be enough to idle the engine after starting it with starting fluid. So again I suggest checking your fuel pressure and getting an exact reading of what it is.

Here is our how-to guide on checking fuel pressure: https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-fuel-system-pressure-and-regulator

Check it with the key on, and engine off. You can borrow a fuel pressure tester from AutoZone for free, you just have to put a deposit on it.

The image below is a direct pull from ALLData. Let me ask you this, when you do start it with the starting fluid, does it stay idling on its own, or do you have to keep spraying starting fluid down the intake?

Okay, Is the service engine light on? If so, you will need to get the codes (can be done without a scanner). If not, then you will have to check your fuses. In particular look at the ones for INJ (injectors), ECM (computer).

Here is a how-to guide for getting those codes: https://www.2carpros.com/articles/buick-cadillac-chevy-gmc-oldsmobile-pontiac-gm-1983-1995-obd1-code-definitions-and-retrieval-method

Try that and let us know what you find.

Try having the battery load tested to check its condition-if its good connect it properly/cleaned and tight and retry.

When you turn key to On do you see all the lights that you normally see. Could be the ignition switch

If you do see the lights-have helper put key to start position while you bang on the starter-if it engages the engiine the starter is bad. If not check the purple wire at the starter solenoid for battery voltage. This is where we stop till you get back.

When it refuses to restart, have a helper crank it, while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs. If no spark, check for primary voltage at the coil. We can go from there.

My Chevy G20 conversion van equipped with an aftermarket alarm (siren disabled) and kill switch. Last month on a few different days when I started it there was a 2 or 3 second delay before it cranked and started right up. Three days ago I shut off my van. When I tried to start it 30 minutes later it would not start. When you turn the key no noise, no clicking, nothing. After sitting and trying it for 3 hours it finally started like nothing was wrong. I drove across the street and shut it off. After 2 1/2 hours it started right up and I drove around the corner. I tried to start it again 30 minutes later and nothing again like earlier that day. This time it started right up 8 hours later. The next day it would not start all day. The next day I hit the starter with a board a couple different times. Then I tapped the alarm module (under hood on firewall) with a screwdriver and it started right up. I drove for an hour and shut it off. After 30 minutes it would not start after tapping the alarm module. It wont start at all now. I need the least expensive way to fix it since I'm jobless. Thanks!

This does sound like an alarm problem. The only problem, there are so many different types of after market systems, I can't even begin to help. You need to identify the brand and then find a place that installs them.

HAd fuel pressure or has it? spark is the electricity that goes through the plug wires to the plugs. You can find a spark tester for cheap, looks like afake plug, with a ground on one end

compression? does it sound normal when cranking? if so then need to check for injector pulse at theconnector. One side should have power, the other side should ground when the engine is cranked

unfortunately you 'll have to scan for codes and check fuel pressure.this is tbi probably so it shold be 9-11 psi but you'll need adapters to do this so best left to a pro. try checking fuses underhood first. there is a fuse box and just look for furses to be not connected or use a test light/voltmeter and turn key on and probe both sides of fuses on top if one has no voltage then that is a bad one. does it turn over? or just not start? it still could be a battery issue even if new.

How do I check for spark in a 1989 chevy G20 conversion van. Its the 5.7 350. The problem is that its been sitting for a while and doesnt want to start. It will crank and crank and crank but wont catch. Im thinking its the fuel pump because I dont hear it or smell any gas while its trying to start. Im hopeing its a simpler problem so any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Do below to determine if its fuel or spark

Get a carb cleaner and spray into the carb or the throttle body on an EFI. Did it start and die? If not disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors- Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it

'88 G30 5.7 TBI w/200K+ Was doing 45 mph and goosed it thru a yellow light. Let up on the gas to slow down and the engine died. Tried restarting when stopped. It fired then quit once key switched back to on. Tried again a few times and the motor just rotates. Check for codes and only got 12.
It's done something like this before. In 1995 the coil pick-up went out but it threw a code. Then in 2003 the fuel pump went out and think it set a code. In 2010 it began running lousy after being idle for 3 years. Traced it to a bad EGR valve and broken vacuum hose to the EVAP canister. Replaced those along with the CTS and O2 sensor since they were ancient. That was the last repairs until now. I'll be looking inside early in the morning when it's cooler (am in Texas) and was hoping for some insights as to where to check since no codes were set. Thank you!

Since there are no codes, you need to start by checking if there is a good hot blue snapping spark to the plugs and you need to check for proper fuel pump pressure. Check that and let me know what you find.

The TBI injectors are spraying gas in a pretty heavy cone. Got no spark using a HEI spark tester so installed a new Standard coil (the old one was original equipment). Tried again and still no spark. Tried a good coil to dist. lead with no luck. The cap and rotor are fairly new. I thought the ignition module and coil pick-up are OK if the injectors spray?
I believe the motor quit before the ECM could pick up a code.
Thanks!

Electrical problem
1986 Chevy Van V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Hi, the problem is 2 weeks ago when I would shut off the van and than try to start it again there would be no power at all, than I would take the shift move it up and down put it in park and pull up on the shift it would show lights and start. This van also has a tilt steering wheel. Im guessing that the saftey nutural switch is in the steering wheel, not on the transmission. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Hello, my first thought is the ignition switch, if your saying the dash lites won't come on, till you fool with it.

The neutral switch is on the side of the tranny. Shouldn't effect your dash lites.

The ignition switch and lock cylinder are two different parts, one part may effect the other. I'd probably check the feed to and from the ignition switch.
