I purchased the van used and I've been driving it now for about a year was curious to know why or what would possibly be causing not to get engaged in reverse? And recently is starting to feel as if it's surging or shuttering as I'm driving. More so kind of high mileage or higher miles per hour. Can you please give me some feedback? I would appreciate that. Thank you.

Reverse is the first to go when you have low pressure issues as reverse requires the highest pressure.

This could be caused by low fluid, a plugged filter, a bad pump, blown seal, bad solenoid or the least common a worn out clutch pack.

As for the other issue, that sounds like you have clutches slipping which could again be low fluid, or a plugged filter or worn out clutches. Given the mileage you likely need to rebuild the transmission. You have all the symptoms of it being at the end of its life span.

If it is slipping and not at the end of its life and the slipping is a result of another issue you will burn out the clutches if you continue to drive it.

I would recommend taking it to a transmission shop and have it diagnosed.

I have seen the input shaft speed sensor cause this issue and sometimes cause a code. here is a guide to help you retrieve the codes and the sensor location so you can check it out:

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

Van will not come out of 2nd gear. Starts in 2nd gear and stays in 2nd gear. Computer codes says soemthign about modulator valve. Where is the modulator valve located and is it something easy enough for a average person to replace?

Hi billymac here. well there is really not anything that servicing the trans can cause.however here is a thought a lot of times when a trans is going bad the dirty fluid and worn fiber parts work as a replacement for clutch disc.and when you change the fluid then the disc will start to slip this is called washing,,was there metal in the pan when you changed the oil? another possibility is output sensor and input sensors or even trans computer.the computer has the capability of adjusting harsh shift patterns if this is the case driving it for a few days will solve the prob.
Has the check engine light come on?
It calls for Mopar ATF 4 so I would imagine the Valvoline you used would be an acceptable fluid, is the level correct?

Read the guide below, it might help you figure out whats going on

hope this helps billymac

I have a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan. When I get up to 40 miles an hour it downshifts hard it feels like I'm slamming on the brakes. I've already changed the shift solenoid twice and I've had the transmission fluid and filter is changed. What else could it be?

My van has the check engine light on, what started happening is that the transmission wont shift past the second gear. It doesnt slip or it hasent lost power. I checked the fluid and its clean and at the right level. I checked the check codes and it reads a problem with the engine control module(computer), or at least that what the mechanic told me. Could changing the computer fix it or is it a gamble? Another simptom is that the speedometer sometimes works and sometimes it doesnt. Whats that about, is it related?

First of all guys thanx for the info. Now a question, where is this famous TCM I keep hearing about, I cant find its location? I will first change the sensors and if that does'nt work I would like to know where the hell is the TCM before I take it to a mechanic. The codes that come out are p1684 wich I think means that the battery was disconected and the other is p0700. It has some e codes too, I have no idea what those mean e1003, e1004, e1005, and e1006, any info would be appreciated.

The TCM is located behind the inner

fender well of the driver side wheel. It also has a very high failure rate due to corrosion and also check wiring because

of its location.
