I can unplug number 3 and number 4 coil packs at the same time and makes no difference. Scanned it and showed several codes. One being camshaft sensor on left bank, could this be the problem? I have replaced coil packs, plugs and have checked fuel injectors. Just can't get fire to number 3 and 4 coil packs.

Hi,

Have you checked for spark at cylinders 3 and 4? If you have spark, we have a different issue.

Is there any smoke from the exhaust or odd odors? What codes were found when you scanned the computer?

Do me a favor. Confirm if there is or isn't spark to the affected cylinders.

Here is a link that explains how it's done:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-for-ignition-spark

If there is no spark, we need to check if the two coil packs are getting power, ground, and a ground reference signal.

If you look below, I attached the schematic of the coils. The yellow wire with a gray tracer should have power at all times with the key on. Confirm that. If that is good, then we need to check the black wire with a violet tracer for continuity to ground. If that is good, we need to confirm the PCM is providing a ground reference signal. Here is how to do this:

First, disconnect one of the connectors at 3 or 4. On cylinder 3, you need to locate the blue wire with an orange tracer. Let's start with that one first.

Take a test lamp and connect one side to the battery-positive terminal. In the wiring connector, locate the blue/orange wire and touch the connector pin with the other end of the test lamp. Have a helper crank the engine. If the PCM is doing its job, the test lamp will blink on and off. If it never turns on, the PCM isn't providing a ground path.

You can do the same on cylinder 4. The only difference is the wire to test in the connector is a green wire with a violet tracer. Don't mix it up with the ground wire.

Let me know what you find or if you have questions.

Take care,

Joe

Note: you don't need to perform the last test if you have spark at the plug when testing.

Let me try this again. I tried to test no light, but color of wires is different. On #3 from left to right I have a blue with orange a purple with black and what appears to be brown with grey. On # 4 left to right is brown and purple a black and purple and a brown with white or light grey. Checked for ground cannot get light to blink but #4 wire is not free with violet stripe. I got a brown with grey, black and purple and a darker brown with a purple stripe. Left to right. Thanks email. Your email I will run that test and let you know the results as soon as I can. Unfortunately, I have to work outside in my driveway, and I'll have to let it warm up a little bit.

Hi Don,

I just went through two service manuals and checked both the 1.6L and the 2.0L, both turbo. Although they have different colors based on engine size, they don't match what you are describing. Do any of the wires have power with the key on?

Are any of the wires yellow with a gray tracer? That is what both manuals indicate for the 1.6L. If not, can you take a couple of pics of the connectors and wire colors so I can see what you are dealing with?

Let me know.

Joe

I just checked for power. There is power to the brown with grey stripe on both cylinders. Here are the photos of the wiring at the plugs of 3 and 4. I'll check for a live one when it quits raining and get back to you.

Hi,

I don't show those colors as an option for either the 1.6 or the 2.0. So, I went back a model year and forward a model year and they still don't match either engine. I thought maybe if it was an early or late production vehicle, that may be different, but still nothing matching.

Is the year, make, and model accurate listed above? 2013 Ford Escape 1.6L Turbo?

It's titled as 2013 but I'll send the VIN soon as I get home this evening and can check that way.

Hi,

That doesn't make sense. I checked a 2012 and a 2014 and they were different too. I even went to a different manual and it's the same. See pic below.

If you can, let me know what the 8th digit is in the VIN.

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe

Hi,

The 10th digit in is the model year code. You have a D code. That indicates 2013. I am going to ask Ken, the site owner, if he has any ideas why the wire colors are not matching.

You can expect a response back from one of us.

Hang in there.
