When I turn on the heater it only blows cold air and it makes a clicking sound. What could this be and how much would it cost to get a new heater?

Actually, the heater is most likely fine. However, there is what is called a blend door that is actuated by engine vacuum. Its position (open or closed) determines if you get AC or Heat. Based on what you said, it sounds like it is stuck which is causing you to only get cold air. Check it. It is part of the HVAC system and located near the heater core box.

Let me know what you find.

I have no heat in my 2002 Explorer. When turned on, it smells like something died. A/C works. What could this be and how do I fix it?

It's possible something did die. You may have to remove the blower motor for inspection. It may also be fungus and mold growing on the evaporator core from the moisture.

That would explain the smell, but would that cause it not to heat up?

I have replaced the thermostate and now the engine is smoking when it over heats, why?

Prior to replacing the thermostate I was having my gauge read hot but no smoking occured but the line was hot! Also, my coollant level in the resivior was empty. Now that I replaced the thermostate the engine is smoking and still over heating and my heater stopped blowing hot air.

What should I be checking?

Did you bleed the system of air when you replaced the thermostat? Did you use a new gasket and torque it properly making sure that it wasnt leaking around it?

Was thermostat properly replaced and put in the proper way? Was proper thermostat put in?

Are there leaks under the car? Pressure test the radiator and replace or you'll bust a hose and have to replace that too I speak from experience
ps if you do bust a hose check the small ones first.

There is a blend door control motor that is a common failure. Have a shop check it for you to verify and give you a bid.

I have a 2000 fird explorer and I have no heat. I have heard from many people that it might be my heater core but im not sure. Is there any way to find out if it is the heater core that is causing the car to not have any heat or is it something else.

Try bleeding the system you may just have air trapped?

COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING
WARNING:When engine is operating, Do not remove radiator cap under any conditions. Failure to follow instruction may damage cooling system or engine, or cause personal injury. Always wrap protective material around radiator cap to avoid injury from hot coolant.

Except Villager
Turn heater controls to maximum and set air discharge to instrument panel vents. Turn blower to high. Fill cooling system with 50/50 mixture of coolant and water. Pause several minutes for circulation. Start engine and allow to idle. While engine is idling, feel for hot air at instrument panel vents. If air discharge remains cool and coolant temperature gauge does not move, coolant level is low.
Stop engine and allow it to cool. Top off coolant as necessary. Start engine and allow it to idle until normal operating temperature is reached. Hot air should discharge from instrument panel vents. Coolant temperature gauge should maintain a stable reading in middle of range. Upper radiator hose should feel hot to touch. Stop engine and allow it to cool. Top off coolant as necessary. Check for coolant leaks.

Heater problem
2000 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

It just started but the heater has not worked on the last two relly cold morning taking the kids to school. By the time I crank it and turn it off about 5 times the heaters starts to work. What could it be. The only other problem I have with it which has been going on awhile is the truck is running rough, drinking way to much gas and sometime the check engine light comes on after a long trip and when we get that teasted it says it is trouble on the number 5 cylinder. But the wires and plugs have been changed. Anyways I am really worried bout the heater now.I am getting someone to look at the other problem but any info oin anything would help. Thanks

Is the engine running at a normal operating temp? If so, start the engine, let it warm up, with the heater on high, feel both heater core hoses. Both should be hot. Let me know what you find with that. Also, I will assume the blower motor is working. If that is where the problem is, when it doesn't work, you need to check if the motor is getting power.

Let me know what you find.

Just had some work done. Exhaust manifold, erg tube the heat was working fine before it was worked on. Now no heat the blower works and I hear the door opening but no heat. However the ac compressor keeps coming on. If I use just the vent with no blower the air will come out warm. When I drive it gets colder. Could it be a vacuum problem

Yes the system is vacuum operated for direction etc. Check for a line off on engine near where work was done. Check at engine or vacuum reservoir under hood. Connection is at right rear of engine compartment on cowl, could be broken or disconnected etc.
