If the distributor assy is original and has not been replaced before, I would suggest checking the vacumn advance mechanism. A leaking vacumn or a stuck advance mechanism would cause the timing to be out of specs.
I am not sure if the distributor is fixed slotted or has gears. If it is equipped with gears, and the vacumn mechanism is in good order, most probably the distributor has been installed out of alignment by 1 tooth. This can be rectified by pulling up the distributor and advancing the rotor by 1 tooth and reinstalling.
Incorrect ignition timing would cause performance and fuel consumption issues. Timing chain would be more likely to be affected by wear over use rather than the ignition timing.
