The Check Engine light has recently come on in my dash board. I don't know the cause of it. I recently did a tune-up and oil change. The light came on a day after I took a 100 trip. The road is known for its curves and steep downhills, so I'm wondering if this had anything to do with this light coming on. I do recall changing to the second gear while I was going downhill, but it was only for a moment.

The morning when the check engine light came on, I noticed the engine was a bit louder and rough sounding, not its normal sound during warm up. I'd like to know what I can do, what I should check or if I just should take the car to the shop and have them run a diagnostic check. Thanks for the help.

IF the CEL came on after your tune up, then carefully retrace your steps to be sure that you didn't forget to reconnect something, tighten a clamp, a disconnected vacuum hose etc. This is a good first step regardless. Visual inspection.

The computers on these cars are real primitive so when the light comes on there is a real problem. Sounds like you might be describing a egr valve that may be stuck open a little. Definitely have it checked out, it will be worth it in the long run, trust me. Let me know what the diagnosis is and I can kind of guide you of importance and if its possible you can repair yourself

I should've been more specific about the tune-up, I didn't mean recently, I meant a while ago. About a month and a half ago, so I don't know if that is the problem, I will however, follow your advice and do a visual check under the hood to see if anything has come off.
I plan to take the car to the shop for the test, they'll charge me 50 bucks, which I guess is worth the peace of mind. Tomorrow when I get back from the shop, I'll post the results and see what you recommend. Thanks for your replies.
