1990 Nissan Sentra heating up

I have a nissan sentra 1990 and recently it has been heating up no I have no knowledge of cars number one but I filled up the coolant, oil and water did I miss sumthing and its not much heating but it still worries me the needle goes up 1/4 of the way up and it goes up and down wen im driving is tat bad. Oh and recentlly just got a new alternator if that helps?

Why don't you try replacing the thermostat and see what happens-don't work check the radiator if its clogged and water pump if its functioning properly and cooling fan come on.
