clutch noise

everytime i put the clutch in and than when i start to release it.. it starts to make a grinding noise... and it's quite load... but it only makes the noise when it partially down ... it stops when my foot is off the clutch and when it's all the way to the floor. doesn't matter whether i'm in gear or not...it still makes the sounds.. and sometimes it smells too... Any advice????

yep bad throwout bearing and/or pressure plate.

I concur - suspect the plate first though.
