I work in support of service members and their Families in providing emergency financial assistance including approval for car repairs. Sometimes I'm not sure if the repair cost is unreasonable without making numerous calls to other repair shops. Dealer estimate is $4500; another repair shop is $3425 with 24 mo warranty. High dollar repair for a car with such low miles. What is your opinion?

Transmission replacement for any vehicle is never going to be a small repair bill. For the 2005 Maxima, it will take around 15 - 16 labor hours to remove and replace the transmission. Transmission shops on average charge around $70 an hour labor. That is approx. $1,000 just in labor. Then you have to add the cost of the new or rebuilt transmission you are getting to the $1,000 and that will be your estimate. Either way, both of your estimates seem very high unless they are using a brand new transmission.
