Just purchased vehicle as used. In September after getting gas at which time I pinched the gas and possibly put too much gas in tank, drove home and "service engine soon" light went on. Went to my mechanic he cleared it and reset it. In December I had the oil changed and left the garage and drove about 15 miles and the "service engine soon" light went on. Took it to Nissan dealer in January and they replaced an oxygen sensor to the tune of $150.00. Took it out of the garage drove it about 15 miles filled the gas tank and drove about 10 miles and it went on again. I am about to drive it through the dealer's showroom window if they put a part on to correct a problem and about 25 miles later the same error occurs. What is happening here?

The above happened on a Wednesday and I called the dealer and got an appointment to look at it. Today is Sunday and the light went out. Will the error code(s) be stored or will my trip to the dealer be a waste of time

Are you sure it is the same problem that keeps reapearing? Take it to autozone they will scan it for free.

My wife has a 98 Maxima with around 146,000 miles on it. I has been one heck of a car, although my dad and I have had to replace few things on it. The service engine soon light on Maximas are only for the emission system. Her car has 3 O2 sensors and the code will be able to tell you which one is out. We have had to replace all three, so I would expect that. It isnt hard to change them either; locate them, a few turns of a wrench and rewiring. They are about 60-70/each at local parts store (I recommend O'reilly's). So for what you pay for one replacement at the dealer, you can almost pay for all 3.

Hope this helps.
