1994 Nissan Maxima heater takes a long time to start workin

I put a new thermostat on my 94 Maxima and now it takes about 20 minutes for the heat to kick on after the temp. Gauges pegs out on "H" for a few seconds then returns to normal. What is happening here?

You may have air in the radiator. You need to purge the air out. Run the motor and check the radiator level careful DO NOT OPEN WHEN HOT!
