1985 Nissan Maxima 6 cyl Manual

we have taken out the old right axle because it broke in half. We are trying to get the new right axle in but having trouble getting the new one in place.
why would we have so much trouble making the new one go in? What are we doing wrong?

Shove it in till the snap ring locks in place

We have tried to shove it in until it snaps. We get it so far and thats it it want go no more. We have checked to make sure we have the correct axle and size; that is correct. Ok thank you for your help
