Nissan Transmission

I have a 2001 Nissan Frontier with approx 102k miles. I have to admit I have not drained and replaced the tranmission fluid before. I have noticed that lately if I downshift into 2nd I hear a grinding noise. I took it in and they said it is probably the synchromesh, and in order to replace it would require the transmission to be removed and would be costly. Is there anything else that could be causing this noise? If I don't do the repair what are the possible ramifications. What advice do you have on driaining or replacing the transmission fluid at this point? Thanks!

While it can't hurt to drain andreplace the tranny fluid, you are definitely going to want to address the issue soon. If it is indeed the synchros, don't ignore it. Can lead to busted gear teeth and eventually slippage leading to more rpoblems.
