I have a dealer-level scanner for all of my older vehicles, but for my newer truck, I found the same Snapon model as my friend uses in his shop. It's a Snapon Solus Edge. These have one major disadvantage that can work in your favor. The cost to update them every year to keep them current is around $1000.00 per year, and you can't skip any years. EBay is a good place to find these. If you find one updated through 2014, for example, a shop owner would have to buy the 2015 update before he could buy the 2016 update, and then the 2017 update, etc. It would be less expensive to just buy a brand new scanner than to pay for all those updates, so they lose their value to a shop very quickly. All you need is one that's updated enough to cover your model year. There's a lot of them listed that are updated through 2012 to around 2015 for less than $800.00. Mine was updated to current in 2018 when I bought it, which is much less than half the cost of a new one. Be aware if you were to buy a new one, you have to pay extra for European coverage, and extra again for Asian import coverage.
You might also look at the Autel scanners at Harbor Freight Tools. I have never used one, but according to what I read, a lot of people like them.
