This could be the result of many things. First, if you are able to keep the engine running by pressing the throttle, suspect a plugged or faulty Idle Air Control valve (IAC). This component maintains engine idle speed. It is located on the throttle body. I have attached a picture for your review.
Next, confirm that you are not losing spark or injector pulse once the key is released to the run position. Here are links for checking:

Some additional thoughts. Make sure you have a 5 volt reference to the opti-spark ignition control module in the distributor.
