my son has a 2002 mitsubshi montero with over 200,000 miles. It was stuck in 4 wheel drive so i dropped the front driveshaft. now it makes a whinning noise. I lifted the entire car off the tires and put it gear no noise. Sounds like a rear end or the transfer case. why dont I hear it when it is off the wheels and in gear.very loud but not a grinding noise.

No load on the axle! Sounds like a bad hub bearing, try this test, get up to the speed the noise starts, then quickly turn left, then straight, then right, do this on a straight section of road, if the noise goes away during one of the turns, the opposite bearing is bad... if noise does not go away, then it's inside the pumpkin, carrier or pinion bearing.
