I have an 02 eclipse with about 140,000 miles on it. When I accelerate up hills while in lower rpm's the engine seems to hesitate and not want to speed up unless I go farther down on the petal which at that time the car downshifts and the car accelerates well. The car idles fine and has never died on me. Sometimes it feels like the engine slightly misses. This issue just occured recently and did not accelerate this slowly up hills till now. I was thinking it could be a spark plug wire or distributor problem; At the same time praying its not the fuel pump. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why don't you give it a fresh major tune-up, have the exhaust system check for restriction to rule out a clogged catalytic converter. Also check the throttle position sensor to inlude an EGR opening too soon.

It just had a major tune up when I bought it about 4 or 5 months ago. The catalytic converters have been cut out and replaced with straight pipe. Egr valve has been replaced. Im thinking its an ignition issue also for the fact that the exhaust smells more than it should. Im low on cash so im realy trying to get down to the exact problem and replace it and be done.

Check the throttle position sensor test its resistance and voltages closed and wide open throttle-the TPS take the place of an accelerator pump/power valve in a carb fuel system
