Check engine light on?

Hi tonyyankee,

When the MIL shows, an error has been detected and you need a scan to retrieve the trouble codes to understand the problem and find out the cause.

Autozone or most major parts houses provides the scanning services free. Get the scan done and let me know the exact trouble code so I can explain to you what it means.

Purchased from dealership feb 27 09. Chk engine light just came on. Runs fine, quiet, not under a warranty any longer. What could my light be on for? 1 qt over in oil, and they never changed my oil filter. Or could I just nd a tune up. And a fresh oil change/filter.

Any sensor can trigger a code. You can disconnect your battery and clear it and then see if it pops back up.

But either way, codes don't necesarily mean something severe. Its just means something is out od specs. And if the car has X number of running cylces without the problems it'll clear itself if it is a trouble code.

The computer is not dead. The computer may have just not stored the code even though a sensor has triggered a check engine problem. A sensor can be out of specs but not meet certain requirements for the computer to register it.

You'll need to just run for a week or two and see if it picks it up. Otherwise, just disconnect your batter for a minute or 2 and clear your code that way (make sure you have your radio code before doing that).

The service engine light came on, so I disconnected the battery after adding approx..5 gallon of coolant, to bring the coolant level up to full. Now the light is still on and the car has begun to stall when it is at idle. If you catch it and hit the throttle, the engine will run just fine. The car runs very well at speed and the only time this happens is when the car is at idle.

Bad idea disconnecting the battery the computer loses it memory when you do that. The computer has to relearn itself could last up to 40 restarts to regain it.

Hi there,

You will have to clear the ecu code first, then re test for any problem after you have been for a drive.

My car caught on fire inside 6 monts ago, just a little wiring got burn't I took it to a shop so that the car would at least run again, so they did just the basic as I asked, the only thing that does not work is the cigarrete lighter which is no big deal to me, however the check engine light stayed on and they asured me that there is nothing wrong, but I would have to pay them more if I wanted all the wiring reconnected, dont have the money for that so I disconnected the battery and plugged it back after a few minutes and took it for a 10 mile drive, the light remained off so it seemed to had reset the computer, however after turning it off and back on again the light came back on, I need it to pass inspection but it will not if the light is on how can I disable the light so that it passes the inspection? I don't have the money to throw away since I lost my job and have 2 kids to feed, and cant find the internal fuse box since I dont have the manual either, please help so that I can be street legal again. Thank you in advance and I hope that my small dollar makes a difference.

The first thing we need to do is find out what code the computer is kicking out. You should be able to take it to a local parts store and have the computer scanned to retrieve the code. Don't buy any parts yet, just get the code and post back here. We can go from there. If you have any further questions, feel free to give us a shout.

Ok the code is po141, ho2s 12 heater condition (heated oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 2) probable causes 1) OS defective 2) poor connection at OS and 3) check circuit-fuse.
The prices given to me ranged from 70 bucks to 170 buck's give or take depending on the brand and also on wich one needed to be changed out of the 4 it has? So where do I go from here and if I get the part or parts is it easy for me to do it or should I have a pro do it? Thanks again for your help and your quick attention! God bless!

The code is being thrown because the heated portion of the O2 sensor isn't working. It is something relatively simple to change, but you need to make sure it is the sensor and not the wiring. Check for visible signs of damage from the fire. If you locate cylinder #1 on your engine, that is bank one. Follow the exhaust manifold down and to the catalytic converter. The second O2 sensor that you find is position two (O2 bank one position two). You should have two per side of the engine (the other side being bank two). From there you can trace the wires to inspect for damage. If you don't find any damage, suspect that the sensor is bad. The other posibility is that the computer is not sending out the voltage to heat it up, but in order to test that, you need to be a little more versed on testing electrical systems. If we need to we can go that route. Let me know what you find and if you need more help.

Looking at the car listed above to buy for $800.00. She states it is a Point A to Point B car. She crashed it two years ago but put a lot of work into to bring it back to life. No air bags. Radio does not work and check engine light is on. New radiator last year, new cam shaft and brakes last month. Am I looking at some serious issues with this? Should I move on or do you think its worth the time to invest?

Much and any advice would help

Have an auto parts scan for codes to see why check engine light is on. It is $500.00 at least for an air bag and hard telling what else is wrong with it. You decide, we do not advise on things like this.

It may or may not the code will only tell you what circuit is giving the problem then it has to go from there. It can be a fuel pump or a sensor or even a bad computer or a wiring issue/connection. It really depends on what it is If it is like a 0429/30 code then that is bad converter which is about $600.00 to $800.00 to replace.

One day the sound of my exhuast dramatically changed from troaty to something more like a chain saw. Engine seemd to be firing fine, but 30 miles later service engine light came on. Took car to local shop. Got multiple misfire code. New plugs, wires, roter etc installed and car tuned. When I picked up the car, light was out but exhaust still sounded funny. Service engine light came on next day. Took car to an official Mitsu dealer, explained problem and change in exhaust sound. They could n't finad anything but suggeted we reflash the compyer - which I havd them do. I picked up the car. Same strange exhaust sound but light was off. By the time I got the car home - service engine light was on again. I am wondering of the problem isn't tied to the catalytic converter or something in the tuned exhaust system that has failed and caused the change in exhaust sound and maybe adding backpressure that might be affecting the exhaust and tripping the light. Should I have the catalytic converter pulled?

OK I just had Autozone check the engine code and it was P0300 multiple Cylinder misfire which it has been the last two times I've had it in for repairs over the last week. Keeping in mind that I just had new plugs, wires, cap, rotor and tune up one week ago ( which eliminated the service engine light for 1 day - but never affected the change in exhaust sound), then 2 days ago the Mitsu dealer checked it, reflashed the computer, light went off for 24 hours but came back on and the exahuast still does not sound right. The dramatic change in exhaust sound happend right before the light came on for the first time, and all the work to date has not changed the exhuast sound back to what it originally sounded like. This seems like this is a key clue in the problem and I'm wondering if I have a catlytic converter problem which is causing fouling or misfiring. I'm at the point of telling the mechanics to stop doing tuneups and parts replacements and look at the exhaust system - does that sound like the right direction to try?

Go to auto zone and have the car scanned for codes and get back to us with the code numbers and we can go from there.
