I blew my head gasket and brought it to a place that everyone told me has fair estimates. I just moved to california from new jersey. I had two friends that owned shops there, so I never had to pay labor. I asked them how much it would cost and they said between 800-1500. The guy that I brought it to has estimated the fix at 2200-2500. Its a 1995 eclipse gst. I find this absurd. I can buy a new engine at that cost. Am I right? Should I find someone else to do the job?

I have had the same problem with my 98 gst and it's not too hard to do it yourself if you have the right tools. I had a torque wrench and an engine hoist and got the head up off the engine high enough to get the gasket off and get the new one in there and torque it to specs. I'm not a mechanic but I work on my cars in the off time. And buying a gasket set is cheaper than buying one gasket at a time and then you have extras
